Lewis Hamilton is the 2014 World Champion, after a brilliant drive saw him win the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

In the end it was a comfortable evening after his team-mate and title rival, Nico Rosberg, suffered engine problems, which sent him tumbling down the field and out of contention.

Hamilton was left to fend off Felipe Massa but he held on to take his 33rd career win, and his second world championship.

Hamilton has become the first British driver to win multiple world championships in over 40 years and he later described it as “the greatest day of my life”. After the race, Rosberg congratulated Hamilton after an intense season.

Rosberg kept Hamilton in sight until his ERS failed. This took away much of his pace. He tried gallantly to fight but the problems were insurmountable and he fell down to 14th.

Hamilton went on and cruised to his 11th win of the season ahead of Massa in second and Valtteri Bottas in third.

Daniel Ricciardo once again out raced Sebastian Vettel after the pair started from the pit lane. Ricciardo came fourth, while Ferrari-bound Vettel struggled to eighth. Jenson Button came fifth in what could be his last race for McLaren.
