Caterham have been given permission to use this year’s Formula 1 car in the 2015 season, if they find a buyer.

The team entered administration in October after months of financial uncertainty, and were forced to miss the races in Russia and the USA.

A controversial crowdfunding scheme saw them return for the season-ending race in Abu Dhabi, where the administrations were positive at the prospects of finding a buyer.

By allowing them to use this year’s car, any potential new owner wouldn’t have to worry about paying to build and continuously develop a new car until 2016.

Administrator Finbarr O’Connell said: “The F1 commission and the FIA agreed if it would assist the weaker teams they can use the 2014 car next year, so giving them more time and options.

“That is of interest to all the parties I’m talking to because it gives them a choice, an easier start to get into F1 if they chose that route. It helps.”

O’Connell still believes that having a deal done by Christmas is crucial but it also confident that the team will still be on the grid next season.
