Former McLaren driver David Coulthard believes his ex-team should retain Jenson Button as Fernando Alonso’s team-mate next season.
McLaren are the only guaranteed 2015 entrants who are yet to confirm their driver line-up, although Alonso is understood to have signed.
Reports suggest that McLaren are yet to decide between the experienced Button and his cheaper team-mate Kevin Magnussen, and Coulthard believes it’s a simple decision.
He told reporters: “If you just look at results then Jenson is the guy who should be in that seat next year.
Jenson Button
“He has outperformed and outscored his team-mate and that is nothing to do with personality or nationality. But unfortunately for Jenson, the business of Formula 1 is what funds the sport so he may well be a casualty.”
Button is believed to earn in the region of £13 million a year, while Fernando Alonso‘s salary is expected to be double.
Due to his age and lack of experience, Magnussen earns less than a million, while McLaren could pull a surprise and choose the novice Stoffel Vandoorne, who would be as cheap as Magnussen.
