Ecclestone keen on South Africa return
Formula 1 chief Bernie Ecclestone has said that he is keen on taking the sport back to South Africa.
The Kyalami circuit was a regular host during the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s before it disappeared in 1985, and Ecclestone wants to put the event back on the calendar.
He told RIA Novosti: “We want to have a race in South Africa, it would be great to get back to this part of the world.”
If F1 does return to South Africa, it is more likely that it would be at a new street circuit in a major city like Johannesburg or Cape Town, as opposed to the Kyalami track which has previously stated F1 is too expensive.
Ecclestone also said that he would like to add a second date in the USA, with Las Vegas now reportedly preferred over the failed race in New Jersey.
The current calendar is at 21 races after the surprise addition of Korea for the 2015 season. But the teams would prefer it not exceed 20 races.
Next year will see the inaugural race in Azerbaijan, while India is also keen to return. Traditional, older venues such as Monza in Italy, Sepang in Malaysia and both host tracks in Germany are said to be under threat in the future.
