Formula One chief Bernie Ecclestone has said that the controversial double points system could disappear next season.

Sunday’s season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix will see double points on offer for the first time in order to prolong interest in the championship battle.

The announcement provoked a lot of criticism from fans and teams who have judged the system to be artificial. Ecclestone defends himself by saying one race with double points is daft and that it should be three instead.

He told the Independent: “I’m not going to propose the three races again. I’m going to let them get on with it. I don’t know what we’ll do next year.

“One race is stupid but imagine if it was the last three races. It means that somebody would have to have a 150-point advantage minimum to be sure they will win.

“The teams have not accepted it because they are bloody idiots. They are all mechanics. They think of their team in the short run.”

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff, who’s two drivers are competing for the world championship on Sunday in an outcome which could be effected by double points, hopes that it doesn’t return.

He said: “Nobody likes the double points. We are going to discuss that next time around. I don’t think Bernie likes them, so it’s probably something we should be getting rid of for next year.”
