Apr.13 - F1 legend Gerhard Berger thinks Lewis Hamilton's Formula 1 future is up in the air.

Publicly, Mercedes boss Toto Wolff and seven time world champion Hamilton, 38, are declaring their intention to ink a new contract beyond 2023.

But Berger thinks it's possible that Hamilton will actually make an audacious move to Ferrari.

"Every racing driver wants to drive for Ferrari at least once," the former Ferrari driver told Kronen Zeitung newspaper. "And almost all the good ones have been there.

"Ayrton Senna didn't go because he knew he couldn't win there. It may be that Lewis thinks that too.

"But if he can't get a competitive car at Mercedes, and he doesn't see a place at Red Bull, it could be that he thinks 'I don't want to stop just yet so I'll give Ferrari a try. Maybe I can fix it'," Berger, 63, added.

However, Hamilton makes a habit of routinely saying that he can never imagine leaving Mercedes.

"But that means nothing in Formula 1," Berger laughs. "No one reveals their cards there."

I don't think I've ever heard Gerhard Berger referred to as a legend before. Does this mean that David Coulthard will be a legend before too long?

His chin and jaw line should be, hes a sort of legend , setting up the C4 highlights show, so UK fans get 60%-80% of an F1 race with unbiased commentary on a free to air service again adds to his longevity after F1, But i have gone over to the dark side fully and have to embarrassingly admit i watch it all on Sky now, Arrrrrrr why, why.Ill be sending Christian and Lucy good luck cards .

Berger a F1 LEGEND??? Hardly. Competent racing driver, absolutely, but not a legend. His opinions regarding the knight are meaningless.

Ferrari are apparently very very keen to sign the Dame, however it's not the F1 team showing interest, its the sparkling fizz firm the drivers have on the podium ,they need a new delivery driver, Yes I am a Legend....

Come on guys, Berger survived 210 F1 races in times drivers died during races, he won 48 podiums and won 10 races when legends like Senna and Schumacher and the Williams FW14B where there to beat.

What's your opinion about F1 legends then? What are the criteria for a drivers to say he's a F1 legend?

Berger had a great relationship with Senna , always remember the story about Berger throwing Senna's briefcase out of a helicopter lol

That's exactly the issue though Leopold , the word legend just gets used so easily , like the Goat thing, the more people say it , the more its embeds into f1 folk law whether its actually true or not, myself id not say Berger is a legend but he was a pretty good driver, always seemed to try hard, in a time where others were easily called legends , Senna, Mansell, Prost,Schumacher drove for all the top teams too, regarding the subject matter of the article , Yes its possible she could drive a ferrari in 24, but that doesn't mean she will , id say hes a Patrese, a Rubens, a Checo, a very good No 2, but importantly, hes alive still and a pretty smart businessman to boot
Impossible Leopold to say here's the criteria , everyone's going to have a different opinion, a different era , a different car

IMO, in motor racing a legend is someone who can win in anything they drive, and can win in a car with which others struggle. Three names that come immediately to mind as legends for me are Clark, Nuvolari and Fangio. Of course it is very subjective, and many people will have many opinions! I agree with Shroppy, the word legend and GOAT are used too flippantly lately. Gerhard Berger was a very good driver, not a legend. IMO, anyone who wins the WDC is a great driver, but not all are legends.
In the case of Schumacher and Hamilton, they were lucky enough to be in the right car which was most dominant at the right time for them.
Ferrari is littered with the names of former great drivers who have paled into insignificance when they went to Ferrari. Louise will be no different if she ends up at Ferrari!

I hate to take the hot air out of your balloon, but after Jim Clark, formula 1 became more about the car than the driver. Today you can put a very good driver in a great car and he will beat a great driver in a very good car. Lewis Hamilton is proof of that. Most of the current drivers are overpaid spoiled brats. I look forward to the day that of the autonomous race car. The driver really is only important in the fans mind. They are like movie stars and politicians, worthless. If it wasn't for racing they would be a drag on society and living off their trust funds. Without drivers the manufactures would not have all the safety considerations. Today racing has become a high speed parade. Best car leads. Im waiting for the first driver assist features in the cars.
