Max Verstappen's father says the Red Bull driver should not have commented on the yellow flag situation following Valtteri Bottas' qualifying crash in Mexico.

After audaciously admitting to not slowing down for the incident and daring the FIA to "delete my lap", 22-year-old Verstappen lost his pole position.

F1 race director Michael Masi is now vowing to speak "one on one" with Verstappen about safety and yellow flags in Austin.

"We have discussed the press conference," Max's father Jos, a former F1 driver, told Ziggo Sport.

"I think he shouldn't have said anything. Max also told me that he had not seen the yellow flags at all, which I understand, because normally you are informed by your team in such a moment.

"He also saw that other people were not lifting the gas, so Max is disappointed that only he got the penalty.

"But I see it as another learning moment for Max," Jos Verstappen added. "He just has to buy some time next time."

"Max's heart is sometimes on his tongue, which is just the way he is, but apparently that is not always possible in a top sport. It's nice that Max is always straightforward, but this time he shouldn't have said anything."

I am not going to comment on the idiocy of Jos' comments. Just read this article three times and you will begin to understand VER's arrogant attitude. He comes by it honestly.

ReallyoldRacer. You've hit the nail on the head - at Red Bull there appears to be no one to"mentor" Max,so,enter (stage left) Jos steps in and fills sons head with his own arrogance and negativity - at least at Ferrari Leclerc admits that he 'listens' to Seb and contrary to what the fans ears are filled with Leclerc admits he is not the equal of Seb and that he is ready to learn from the x 4 champion, yes,a learning curve - on day one Max thought it was his right to be a champion and feted as such but racing history shows us that arrogance will not always win out. Ps. Max - after 5 seasons and only 7 podiums time will start to pass you by. Get with it or get out of it.

Jo's Verstappen should not be telling his son what or what not to say. it is a very bad way to set a example. shame on you Jo's. Max is now telling lies. Jo's Verstappen if you carry on telling your son to do it your way, Max will get nowhare in f1 like you didn't Jo's..
