Female driver Alice Powell is hoping that she can make her Formula 1 debut with Caterham at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Caterham are half way towards requiring the necessary funds to compete in the season-ending race after going into administration last month.

They started a crowdfunding scheme and have raised just over half of the £2.65 million they need.

British driver Powell is putting together a financial package, with help from her grandfather, in the hope that would be enough to secure the drive.

She said: “If I get to race in free practice for Caterham that would be amazing.”

“I believe they (her grandfather and other backers) were keeping it from me so I didn’t get my hopes up but now it is in all the newspapers. I know what these things are like, you just never know what can happen in sport.”

The 21-year-old currently competes in Formula Renault Asia.
