Fans and industry figures were celebrating today as news emerged that Fernando Alonso would be returning to the world of Formula 1. Back in February the racing world was taken aback after the McLaren driver injured himself in a serious crash at the Circuit de Catalunya during a pre-season testing session. Luckily the driver escaped any truly dangerous injuries, only having to recover from concussion, something that likely meant a drastic reduction in his recovery time.

After travelling to the McLaren factory last week, Alonso poured through the data from his crash with race engineers, hoping to find out what exactly went wrong during the crash. The racer had reported a 'heavy' feeling in the car's steering seconds before he slammed into the wall at Barcelona-Catalunya's Turn Three at a speed of 150km/h. The team have been adding extra sensors to the car in order to ensure that they pick up any issues in the future - telemetry data showed no issues in the lead up to the crash.

Although fans were upset by Alonso's missing of the season opener in Australia on the 15th of March, their spirits are likely to be boosted by the news that the driver will be taking part in the Malaysian GP on the 28th and 29th of March. If you're not sure of the driver's capabilities out on the track, owing to his recent injury, you might want to reconsider your position. The driver has been undertaking a meticulous, painstaking training routine that has been slowly building him back up to scratch. Having passed tests undertaken by renowned scientists at Cambridge University on Sunday - in which the driver had to pass short term, long term and reflex-based tests - it seems that the double world champion may have got back to his previous level of skill.

All Alonso must do now is pass a similar bout of tests in Malaysia itself, however given the already rigorous regime he's been subjected to, it seems like that won't be an issue for the F1 veteran and we look forward to seeing the racer's performance come Saturday.
