Ferrari confirm Alonso exit

Ferrari has released a statement confirming that Fernando Alonso is leaving the team.

The Spaniard has been the subject of a saga over his future all year, but last month it was confirmed that Sebastian Vettel would be leaving Red Bull to replace Alonso.

It is now expected that the 33-year-old will re-join McLaren, the team he left after just one bitter year in 2007.

Alonso scored 11 wins and 44 podiums for Ferrari.

He said: “Today is not an easy one for me, because even if I always look to the future with great enthusiasm and determination, at the end of the season my journey as a Ferrari driver will come to and end.

“It was a difficult decision to take, but a carefully considered one from start to finish, my love for Ferrari was a prime consideration.”

Alonso ultimately grew frustrated with the team who have consistently failed to produce him a top Alonso came close to winning the championship, 2010 and 2012, relied on his outstanding driving to make up for the lack of performance from the car.

Team Principle Marco Mattiacci said: "In the Scuderia Ferrari role of honour of great drivers, Fernando Alonso will always occupy a special place."

Ferrari are yet to announce that four-time champion Vettel will replace Alonso, but that is expected in due course.
