FIA president says social media can destroy F1 completely
Nov.9 - Social media has the potential to "destroy" Formula 1, according to FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem.
Anyone who has been on social media in recent months will attest to the toxic atmosphere, which according to Ben Sulayem took the form of death threats against FIA steward Silvia Bellot recently.
"Indeed a number of FIA staff have also been targeted with harassment and hate posts over the past few years," he said in an open letter.
"It has no place in our sport. It has a devastating effect on our mental health and that of our loved ones.
"And let me be clear - without these people there would be no racing. We have to ask ourselves, who would want to pursue becoming a top official in this environment? The reality is obvious - if this continues it will destroy our sport."
The FIA president is therefore calling for a "collaborative approach" to tackle the social media "scourge", with Ben Sulayem also getting in touch with some of the platforms.
"We are (also) beginning work with governments and fellow sports governing bodies to bring them together to make strong commitments for joint action," he said.
Ben Sulayem also said research is being commissioned, while new AI software will be able to "detect and eradicate abusive content on our own channels".

What a muppet, hes missing the point completely , The Fia want more control to lessen the exposure about there F88kups, get your house in order Binman, oh and Social media helps expose Governments too about how they treat their subjects and migrant workers China--- shut the internet down when they wet themselves, Quatar migrant worker deaths, Come on Binman , let social media show those public stonings and public executions and other lovely practices yours and other Governments pursue, it doesn't work, the media platforms cant and WONT do anything about the in his words scourge, towards associations or Governments, agreed individuals yes(before individuals jump on there billynofriends platform about Hannah if its racist), but not things like fia...lol , does P**taking come under his definitions I wonder.
Quite a rant, Shrop'. Re social media, that is the habitat of exactly the future fans Liberty is courting. Quite a conundrum for the boffos. Me, I'm taking up ballroom dancing, a mostly overlooked competitive sport that gets very little attention.
He, he, shropps running around with steam coming out of his ears,, bless.
Well i haven't been on one for a few days , so I thought about time lol, exactly my point Re the "New fans"
Donalf, Course I'm fuming,This is social media , let the young kids watch f1 on there phones, and google machetes and journalists at the same time
I think surely giving feedback by social media is great. But death threats are very much over the top don't you think?
I agree with Bin that some keyboard warriors go way to far.
I think he's talking about your, canadaeh and donaldftrump constant LH hate campaign, at least the FIA have got something right.
LOL
If the fia identify instances of cheating and then do absolutely nothing to correct the resulting injustice what do they expect.
If they then want to curtail the platforms used to take them to task they will ultimately be the losers. If the officials don’t like it, don’t work for a corrupt organisation follow ROR’s lead, take up ballroom dancing.

Good luck with that! Social media platforms are a law unto themselves, and it is toxic! Social media is the reinvention of the wild, wild lawless west! Their administrators couldn't give two hoots about the content shown on their platforms.
People making death threats, in any form, must be tracked down and given a custodial sentence.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm thinking this social media problem has arisen over the last 8 years or so, before then it was f1 teams, drivers and principles that would spread the news, now it seems that everyone wants a slice of f1 news reporting even TK, bound to happen as it gets more popular.
Those that crave and achieve positions of power and control execute a very specific set of steps to get to their destination. Specifically:
1.Expand your power base through nepotism and corruption.
2.Instigate a monopoly on the use of force to curb public protest.
3.Curry favour by providing public goods efficiently and generously.
4.Get rid of your political enemies...
5.Create and defeat a common enemy.
6.Accumulate power by manipulating the hearts and minds of your citizens.
7.Create an ideology to justify an exalted position.
So, the Bin Man comes from such a society - highly misogynistic and one-sided. No great leap required for him to transfer his modus operandi to running the FIA.
He is following in the footsteps of so many 'world leaders' who ignore public sentiment and established freedoms and declare their way is the only way, and vilify all others.
It's regrettable that fans' voices are going to be silenced. Here in The Democratic People's Republic of Kanada, our gov't just passed broad-band censorship legislation giving invisible and faceless bureaucrats the power to cancel anyone, at any time. Yay!
Binman wants everything silenced just like his country. So they can carry on and get away with whatever they want!!!
