2023 Mexico Formula One Grand Prix - FP1 Report
In the heat of the Mexico Grand Prix, FP1 witnessed some exciting movements on the track and a few technical concerns.
Highlights:
Max Verstappen Dominates: The Dutchman made his mark, topping the timing sheets with a 1m 19.718s lap on the soft tyres.
Technical Troubles Galore:
- Sainz faced hydraulics issues, resulting in a slow start to his session.
- Pourchaire's session was marred by a brake pedal issue, with no recorded timed runs.
- Bottas's regular car reported a brake-by-wire problem.
- Tsunoda, although absent in this report, is set for a grid penalty due to new PU components.
Standout Performances:
- Albon surprised many, coming in second, just 0.095s behind Verstappen.
- Perez, on his home soil, secured the third spot.
- Norris finished fourth with a competitive lap.
Mercedes Under the Radar: The Silver Arrows had a quiet session. Notably, Hamilton placed 11th, while Mercedes seems to have higher expectations for Brazil next weekend, reminiscing Russell's maiden win from last year.
Grip Challenges: The altitude and track conditions proved challenging. Drivers struggled with grip, evident from several wide runs. Interestingly, the soft tyres didn't appear to last for a second push lap.
The Odd Incident: Ricciardo's car lost a piece of bodywork, causing brief concern on track.
Alonso's Hopes: Fernando Alonso had limited track time, a mere two laps. His previous sessions in Austin were affected too. His focus seems to be on adapting to the new floor and setup.
Tight Competitions: The session saw tight timings, especially between Norris and Leclerc. Rookie-team mate comparisons brought Piastri within two-tenths of his partner.
The quickest lap time of last years FP1 was a 1:20,707 min driven by Carlos Sainz with the Ferrari F1-75.
