Sophia Florsch, who made global headlines by surviving a horror Formula 3 crash at Macau in 2018, has dismissed Ferrari's push to sign a female driver.

Referring to Ferrari's driver academy, whose star signing at present is Mick Schumacher, boss Mattia Binotto said recently that he would like some women on the roster.

"Women should be part of the Ferrari academy," he said. "That's something on which we are working right now to make sure that it may happen very soon."

But Florsch does not seem to be interested, as she apparently suspects that it is mere tokenism.

"Is this the spirit of modern people?" the 19-year-old German, who has been nominated for a Laureus comeback of the year award, said on Twitter.

"As long as we (women) are just marketing stuff in racing, nothing will change. We have to show that we are equal. Like Michele Mouton."

Frenchwoman Mouton, now 68, was a pioneering female racing driver, taking four wins and second overall in the 1982 world rally championship.

OK, enough. Agreed, women have the ability to competitively race cars. Agreed, there should be equal opportunity for them to succeed. FACT, it's a numbers game, until there are more young women willing to fight their way up through the pay as you go entry level formulae (where desire = opportunity) there will be a dearth of females at the top. It would be great to see some female response to this article.

"....Agreed, there should be equal opportunity for them to succeed...."

ROR, a small correction if I may: there should be equal opportunity for women to compete. Success will, then, take care of itself.

As the father of a woman in racing, her career was number 1 in her mind until she married, then motherly instincts took over, and a budding career was shelved. These are facts of life and have nothing to do with politics.
