Romain Grosjean has been handed a 20-place grid penalty for this weekend’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

The penalty reflects the poor reliability of the Lotus, which has exceeded the maximum number of engines that can be used.

FIA rules state that if a driver uses more than five of any engine component, then a 10-place penalty will be given.  Every subsequent extra component demands an added five places.

Because Grosjean is unlikely to be competing for pole position, his penalty should run to the next race.

But because Abu Dhabi is the last race of the season, he will get a time penalty at the end of Sunday’s grand prix depending on where he qualifies.

This makes scoring any points unlikely for the Frenchman.
