Lotus driver Romain Grosjean has admitted that he didn’t think he would be anywhere near the podium in yesterday’s Belgian Grand Prix.
The Frenchman benefited from reliability problems for Sebastian Vettel and Daniel Ricciardo to claim his first podium since 2013.
He told reporters: “It's unbelievable to be on the podium. Qualifying was really good, but we never thought about coming back that high on the standings.
"The very optimistic pre-race strategy was giving us P5 and here we are P3. Thirty-one races without a podium I think, since Austin 2013, and so it's just great to be here.”
Grosjean ran a two-stop strategy in comparison to Vettel’s one, and chased down the German in the dying laps before the Ferrari’s tyre dramatically exploded, forcing him into retirement.
Grosjean says that he was spoken too about a potential drive with the Italian team, and this result is a reminder of his capabilities.
He said: "Certainly it's the race that you think 'look what I'm capable of doing', but I know what I can do with the car and when everything is under control I'm really quick.”
