Lewis Hamilton believes the potential titanic battle between Mercedes and Ferrari is just what F1 needs this season.

The Englishman came second in the season-opening race in Australia to team-mate Nico Rosberg, but Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel looked quick in third.

Mercedes believe Ferrari will challenge them for the title this season, and Hamilton is excited ahead of another fight in Bahrain on Sunday.

"I'm excited at the thought of more races like Melbourne," he said.

"There are going to be weekends where we're a few seconds up the road from Ferrari, races where it's wheel-to-wheel and races they might be ahead.

"We really don't know, and that's exciting.

"Bahrain has been entertaining for the past two seasons, so more of the same would be great."

The much-criticised qualifying system will remain in Bahrain, despite calls for it to be dropped.

The elimination-style hour will be given one last chance to prove it can be used successfully this season.
