Red Bull boss Christian Horner is already predicting a dominant season for Mercedes next year.

The engine advantage enjoyed by the 2014 champions has seen them win 16 of 19 races this season, and a typical advantage of about 1.5s per lap over their rivals.

Other teams are hoping to wipe this advantage out with new rules from 2016, but that still leaves next year for Mercedes to dominate.

Horner said: “Nothing’s going to change for next year but we [the sport] can’t afford to not get 2016 right.

“We’re not writing off next year but for sure the gap that there is, and from what we hear the performance gains that Mercedes are bringing next year, it’s going to be a massive challenge to reduce that.

“If you believe the numbers that are floating around, the gap could grow rather than diminish, so that would be rather depressing if that were the case.”

Ferrari and Renault, the other engine suppliers, are playing catch up and are not expected to bridge the gap for next year.

New suppliers Honda remain a mystery.
