Red Bull boss Christian Horner has defended his claim that F1 should change the rules to make it more competitive, by saying that Mercedes are far more dominant than his team ever were.

Horner believes that F1 is set for a season of Mercedes dominance, and he wants the governing bodies to alter the rules in order to help other teams catch them up.

Horner was accused of sour grapes, after Red Bull dominated the sport between 2010-2014.

When asked if he understood the criticism he’d received, he said: “I can understand, but when we were performing we never had the level of dominance that we are seeing, nowhere near.

"At any point in time that we did show a bit of form, the rules changed and we had to adapt to that.

"We had to adapt from fuelling to no fuelling, bodywork changes, double diffuser, no double diffuser, blown diffuser, engine mapping changes mid-season... you name it.

"Unless there is an intervention [from the FIA] like that, then we are set for a season with quite a broad running order."
