Imola Grand Prix cancellation: F1 stands in solidarity with affected communities

May 17 - In light of the recent devastating events in the Emilia-Romagna region, the Formula 1 community stands united in sending heartfelt thoughts and support to the people and communities affected. Our deepest gratitude goes to the emergency services who have been working tirelessly to aid those in need during this difficult time.

Following extensive discussions involving Formula 1, the FIA President, and relevant authorities, including esteemed ministers, the President of the Automobile Club of Italy, the President of Emilia-Romagna Region, the City Mayor, and the race promoter, a collective decision has been made to cancel the scheduled Emilia Romagna Formula 1 Grand Prix weekend at Imola.

This decision has been made with the utmost concern for the safety and well-being of our fans, teams, and personnel. Given the challenging circumstances faced by the towns and cities in the region, it is the responsible course of action to refrain from further burdening the local authorities and emergency services.

Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1, expressed his deep sorrow over the tragic events that have unfolded in his hometown. He extended his thoughts and prayers to the victims of the flooding and the affected families and communities. Domenicali also expressed profound gratitude and admiration for the relentless efforts of the heroic emergency services, who are selflessly working to alleviate the situation.

Domenicali stated, "The decision to cancel the Grand Prix is the right one for the local communities and the entire F1 family. Our primary concern is ensuring safety and not adding any additional pressure on the authorities as they grapple with this devastating situation."

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem also conveyed his sympathy, stating that the thoughts of the entire FIA family are with those impacted by the distressing events in the Emilia-Romagna region. He emphasized that the safety of all involved and the ongoing recovery efforts remain the top priority during this challenging period.
