Former Ferrari driver Eddie Irvine thinks Sebastian Vettel is "massively overrated".

German Vettel was criticised on all sides for his performance in 2018, having failed to win the world championship despite having a car widely regarded as a match for the Mercedes.

"I think Vettel is a good driver, but as a four times world champion, I just don't see it," Irvine, who was Michael Schumacher's teammate until 1999, told the BBC.

"I think he is massively overrated, he's a one-trick pony and Lewis has a much broader talent."

But 53-year-old Irvine, who made a fortune in his post-F1 days as a real estate developer, admits that he doesn't watch the sport anymore "because it bores me".

"It's just got safer and safer," he said. "Which is a good thing but it's gone too far. It's just progress, progress, progress until it's like 'What have we ended up with here?'.

"I think we have ended up with something a bit mushy and not that interesting."

And Irvine doubts that Liberty Media will do much to fix what he thinks is broken about F1, because the American company is most focused upon monetising the sport.

"There are many things that need to change, and each thing that you change would have a knock-on effect. But the new owner has paid a lot of money for it so I don't think they are going to take the risks to do it," he said.

Irvine was actually a very competent F1 driver but he’s never been one to be troubled with self doubt and like most sees his time through rose tinted glasses.

The full article goes on in praise of MS as the all time best and so at least Eddie can bask in the doubt that he would have been champ if it weren’t for Michael. I can’t help but think Vettel in the same machinery would beat him eight times out of ten.

Eddie only "looked fast in a Ferrari any thing else he was "not so good as Stated" his biggest fault was and still is his self opinionated as well as factualy unfounded comments, as well as not having the ability to " ZIP the LIP "If there was a championship for being ignorant he would have one it" so all he is ,is stupidity masked by A Nice Guy act.
Just plain and simple un justified anti German.......

Eddie was a average driver in a good car(nothing more nothing less)
Is what I am saying, champions are judged by championships won, not by how close or who there team mates where and why They( MS ) were champions and not them (Eddie )

A rather big statement from Eddie that I disagree with. I don't think Seb won 4 titles by accident, he just had an ordinary 2018. And I really am surprised he considers higher safety measures have made the sport too boring. You can still have a great, entertaining contest between highly skilled drivers without people being killed or seriously injured. No Eddie, I think you should have kept your gob shut.
