May 13 - Mercedes should keep Valtteri Bottas because he is a "good water carrier" for Lewis Hamilton.

That is the view of former F1 driver Marc Surer, who plays down the rumours linking Bottas with the exit door and George Russell with the Finn's seat for 2022 and beyond.

"The rumours about George Russell as the second driver came from England, of course," Surer told Sport1.

"It would damage the team if they changed drivers. Why? Because Bottas is a good water carrier."

In German, the term 'Wassertrager' refers to a job that was done before centralised water supply systems, when someone would collect water from the source and carry it to others' homes.

"He helps Hamilton," Surer explains, "and you can see at Red Bull how difficult it is to find a good second driver. Bottas is the best number 2, the best water carrier.

"He is criticised all the time because he wins a race every now and then, but he has a thick skin. On a good day he is unbeatable and then he can't do it for the next five races.

"He's not a high-flyer - that's why the criticism has been there from the start," Surer added.

I cant think of a single race he has helped hamilton this year, the last race he even slower hamilton up. He just gets slower with every race

He is partnered with the best driver or one of the top
    five in F1 history.
What is Russell going to do?
    Best Lewis right away?
    I doubt it.

Man I’ve only watched F1 for a few years, but have ex-drivers always talked this much shit about current drivers? I feel like there’s a couple of articles every week with some ex-racer talking shit about a current one.

Good observation. Absolutely not. We've always had trash mouth at track rivalries, but not so much retired driver criticism. Ah, the wonder of social media. LOL

Yes, Mr. Valterri Bottas is the best teammate for Mr. Lewis Hamilton
at the time currently, also for the future, as long as Lewis stays
with the Mercedes F1 team. Just like the past when Mr. Riccardo
Patrese was for Mr. Nigel Mansell, also when Mr. Gerhart Berger was
for the late Mr. Ayrton Senna, not to forget the decent other's.
Don't forget?, the old cliche, "If it's not broke, don't fix it?".

I would love for Russell to get a seat sooner than later. Only to highlight the nonsense being spouted by many that he'd match Lewis's performance.

Put Russel in Bottas' car and watch him push Lewis! That who Totto will nover do it. Russel should take over Vettel's car ;) That wud b fin! But won't happen either...

Push Lewis? Lol. What do you think Verstappen is doing to him now? Have you read where the Brit has had the stongest start to a season...ever? And this is with a mistake in Imola and not with a overwhelmingly stronger car like past years(as demonstrated by Bottas). This is the type of environment he thrives in.....a proper challenge. Implying that Russel would do better than Max in pushing Lewis is a classic case of wishful thinking. Overhyping a driver because of one race. Smh. Which is exactly why I said what I said above.
These attempts at rationale are amusing tho.

Jax, I understand that you are a HAMfan but his start this season is HIS best, not THE best in F1 history. Make your points (they are good ones) but don't overstate them. Do your research. LOL

I wasn't referring to F1 overall. The context was Lewis's career. Your misinterpretation is relatively fair as I said "a season" instead of his season. But a little common sense should also be applied.

    • Jax

In 2016! So he was apparently only good for one year....his last year? Lol. Oh right, he retired as a one hit wonder like daddy. No need to revisit the circumstances of his lucky 5 point victory, but ask Button and Kimi how one hit wonders are remembered. Lol

You would be wise to not try me as ignorant.
So in the pantheon of champions, who remembers Keke Rosberg? How many people knew of him before his son followed in his footsteps(literally)? How many people know of him now regardless?! Lol. Do a poll on all these queries; see how it turns out.
Point being, in the annals of history, they are relatively forgotten because they only did it once; hence, deemed a fluke! Like it or not, that's just how it is.

Can I go for both please....., if we have to explain why those mentioned drivers are held in high esteem among the f1 fans then , well theres no point in life is there, but ill make it simple Kimi has Mintuu, Jenson has Brittny, and Nico has Vivian , and Lewis well, hes got a mutt called Roscoe No being serious now, Nicos win wasnt LUCKY he chased him all year and won the chamionship , any fool can win the chamionship by 100 points but by 5 points means he had to earn it. as for Jenson well the F1 fans know he was yes, Lucky to start the 2009 season but youve still gotta do the business, and Kimi, like he cares.....lol

just being a multiple world champion doesnt make you popular with everyone, it seems

Lol who said this was a popularity contest. Let me repeat in case it flew over your head. It's about "the Annals of History". The crying, wincing, belly aching and jealously of haters comes with the territory. Bringing up one hitters that got lucky are a blip in the grand scheme of things. Haters gonna hate to sooth their irrelevance. Won't change the facts, trajectory or History!
Objective Professional consensus will have the final say.

Man you guys make it easy Lol.

even if lewis becomes the greatest driver of all, it does not impress me. He has had the best help, nurtured by the best, the most money backing, the most help from the team, eg. let hamilton pass! make it easy for him. Expressions like, his car is better than mine, i want it, he put his elbows out to far, let him pass you, smack of corruption. The formular 1 sport is called a DRIVERS CHAMPIONSHIP. So what is going on ?

Shrop', these guys are just blips in the grand scheme of things.....at least in JaxWorld. We 'muricans only have a couple of 'one hit wonders', but Hill and Andretti are fairly well known in the international racing community. Hell, Mario is still out there peddling around tracks doing demos at 80+ yrs old. I would love to see Jax question Nig's relevance to his face. LOL

"Bringing up one hitters that got lucky are a blip in the grand scheme of things". You just had to go inadvertently prove my point by copy and pasting a list huh? Lol. Plus you erroneously said "any fool can win by 100 points". I'd like to see you jump in a Merc and try it. Lol. No...scratch that. Tell Nico to come out of retirement and try it because you may end up hurting yourself.
