Jos Verstappen has defended his son in the wake of the Brazilian grand prix.

Many have criticised the way Red Bull driver Max Verstappen physically accosted Esteban Ocon after being taken out of the lead by the lapped Frenchman.

"Maybe what Max did was not good," Jos, who took out Juan Pablo Montoya from the lead of the Brazilian grand prix in 2001, told De Telegraaf newspaper.

"But I fully understand what he did.

"He was robbed of victory and then Ocon so stupidly stood there and grinned," Jos said.

"We should not make it bigger than it is," he continued. "Football players do that to each other every weekend and Max is professional enough not to beat up anyone.

"I think he was really holding back but it was good that people were standing around him," Verstappen snr added.

Oh god! The father is clueless. So because footballers are aggressive it makes violence to solve emotional upset OK?!

Jos VER has used violence to solve his emotional issues in the past ( read about his controversies on Wiki). That is why Max probably behaves like he does!

Max needs urgent phycological help to manage his anger issues- so get him some dad before he loses professional respect from the other F1 drivers, the F1 community and gets himself in deep legal trouble on physical assault charges ( as his dad -many times in the past).

Max lost the Brazil race because he could not bear to give Ocon room to pass- even though he had the most to lose- as Hamilton told him when the race was over!!

Max' s rage is also probably because he knows he threw his win away- and that is hurting deep down. Accept your mistakes Max and then you will be able to learn from them and move forward- it's part of growing up and maturing!

"...Accept your mistakes Max and then you will be able to learn from them and move forward- it's part of growing up and maturing!..."

Why would he want to grow up and to mature? He'd then have to get married. His father did that and look what happened. Max likes what he's doing: being one of the fastest drivers on the grid.

It gets tiring hearing the same rhetoric about Max Verstappen. Why people are so quick to defend him or justify his actions are beyond me. I hear the words 'passion' and 'spirit' - I see the actions of entitled and poor sportsmanship. I try hard not to judge but all I can see is his prattish behaviour. Robbed of a victory? That implies he was dead certain to win. What BS. Lewis was 100 on the money

I guess you are a LH supporter; well I'm a MV supporter and I'm of the opinion that MV was stolen from a clear and well merited win until this idiot EO hit him. The mere factor that EO got a 10 second stop-n-go proves my point. In addition MV brings F1 back to live...

JOS VER beat up is own dad-Max grandfather. Jos is in no position to defend Max's rages!! Beating up Max granddad and his own dad- what a sad creature Jos is. DON'T use your dad a a role model Max- he is unhinged as you are at the moment.

Max use your millions to get some mental health support. I bet Riccardo is counting down the days when he can break free from RBull and Max!

And the last point should be, how many other F1 drivers do you see pushing their competitors after an on track altercation....um zero. That's because they are mature, nuff said.

Not quite. Mario Andretti was an F-1 driver, as was the man he shoved, Kevin Cogan:

Cogan started from the middle of the front row, next to pole-sitter Mears, and A. J. Foyt. As the field approached the start-finish line to start the race, Cogan suddenly swerved right, touching and bouncing off Foyt's car, and directly into the path of and collecting Mario Andretti. The cars of Dale Whittington and Roger Mears, deeper in the field, were also damaged due to the field checking up. Bobby Rahal also reported getting hit from behind, but was undamaged. The race was immediately red flagged.

Cogan's shocking accident took out four cars, including himself and Andretti. Foyt's team was able to make repairs, and pushed his car out for the restart attempt. Meanwhile, Andretti and Foyt were furious and outspoken about their displeasure with Cogan. Andretti shunned Cogan's attempts to explain himself with a light shove.

Andretti on live radio and television made the comment:
" This is what happens when you have children doing a man's job up front. "

Rens - Not a Hamilton fan at all, but I do certainly respect his racecraft and maturity. He called it how he saw it, and you can't deny the wisdom in what he said. Max is capable of some truly breathtaking driving, but when is he going to learn? And the nonsense about him being still young - after four years of top flight driving he should have some skills to avoid all of this. Regardless of Ocon's involvement, Max can't help but need to prove to everyone he's number one - even the very best won't win them all. Prodigious talent is one thing, but it ain't the whole package.

So long as everyone keeps telling him that he's doing nothing wrong, nothing will change. Good luck to him, but for all of these reasons, he is becoming very unwatchable. Future of F1? No thanks
