Lewis Hamilton’s decision to complain to FIA Technical Director Charlie Whiting about Nico Rosberg’s pole lap in Hungary has been described as regrettable.

The German’s pole lap was controversial as double waved yellow flags were waving, and Hamilton went to see Whiting to discuss the incident.

But Mercedes technical director Paddy Lowe believes Hamilton should have consulted the team before making such a decision.

"It is my understanding that Lewis did go and see Charlie,” he said.

"But it wasn't in any way to seek a review of Nico's lap - it was for his own understanding of what should be done in the future, how that should work for him in the future.

"I think that was regrettable. He should have kept to advice from the team and we could have obtained that from Charlie as necessary.

"But I don't think there is any harm [in Hamilton wanting clarification].

"It was just a misjudgement from that point of view."
