Kevin Magnussen has admitted Renault are using races as test sessions as they seek to put an end to their dismal form and return to something near the midfield pack.

The French team have made no progress since race one and have been left behind by their rivals in qualifying trim and on race day.

In Azerbaijan they were the slowest team of all, and Magnussen revealed they are using races as a chance to test new parts as they hope to find light at the end of the tunnel.

"We realised after P3 that we were going to be very slow and went a completely different way on the set-up," he said.

"We tried the car in a place that we'd never tried it before.

"It wasn't good but it was the right thing to try something different - not because we thought it would be really better, but just to learn.

"We're in a position where we need to learn - take this as a test a little bit.

"We're testing at the moment."
