Pastor Maldonado has said that fans comments don’t bother him, unless they are messages of support.

The Lotus driver has received a lot of criticism online after a series crashes, and for receiving financial help from Venezuelan sponsors.

However, the former race winner insists he doesn't see the point in getting upset at fans comments and says that even the best drivers have their critics.

“I appreciate the people who support myself, who are many- especially from my country and from Latin America,” he told AUTOSPORT.

“Even in Europe I have many fans, especially in Italy because I did my entire (junior) career there. Sure, there are some comments that I don’t like but I can’t do anything.

“It is good to be free to talk and say what you think. There are some people that are not even happy with Alonso. It’s just an example, but some people say he’s arrogant.”

Maldonado became almost a comic figure in the sport for his number of crashes last season,  but the Lotus was particularly difficult to drive.

“You can make mistake, especially when you are racing and pushing hard, and when you don’t have a very stable car it’s even worse,” admitted Maldonado.

The 29-year-old joined Lotus from Williams last year, and saw an unfortunate turn in form which saw Lotus fall from victory contenders to back-markers, while Williams did the opposite.

Lotus is expected to be stronger this year after they announced they would be using Mercedes engines.
