Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko claims that they should be level with Mercedes and fighting for race wins from the beginning of the 2015 European season.

The champions have struggled to adapt to the new rues, despite winning three races this year. But they are a long way behind Mercedes on raw pace.

The problems have been blamed on the Renault power unit but the French providers are treating Red Bull as its works operation, amid a complete revamp of the organisational structure.

Red Bull is creating an engine support division at their Milton Keynes base. And Marko says that the leap they are making will see them competing directly with Mercedes.

“There was a technical meeting where technical upgrades to the power unit were discussed and should be completely implemented by July 2015. So by the start of the European rounds we should have a really competitive power unit”.

Renault supplies three other teams on the grid; Caterham, Toro Rosso and Lotus. Their relationship with Lotus has caused much annoyance at Red Bull, which Marko described Lotus as the “secret darling of Renault”.

However, it is looking increasingly likely that Lotus will start using Mercedes engines from next year, leaving Renault to primarily focus on Red Bull.

The 2015 European leg starts, as is traditional, with the Spanish Grand Prix on May 10th.
