Red Bull’s motorsport consultant, Dr Helmut Marko, is convinced that Daniel Ricciardo will lead the team successfully, now he is the senior driver.

Ricciardo will assume the role of team leader in 2015 after Sebastian Vettel announced he is joining Ferrari at the end of the season.

He will be replaced by young Toro Rosso driver Daniil Kvyat, who will only be in the second year of his Formula 1 career.

The loss of Vettel is a blow to Red Bull, but Marko believes the blow has been softened by Ricciardo’s form.

“If we did not have a ‘team leader’ then the situation would look slightly different- but we knew that Daniel would fill these shoes, so things were much easier”, said Marko.

“We always knew that he could fill anybody’s shoes.”

Ricciardo still has an outside chance of winning the championship this season, although that is very unlikely to happen.

His three race wins have helped him to third in the drivers standings on 199 points. He has 56 more than Vettel.
