Nov.24 - In a significant development for Formula 1, McLaren Racing and Mercedes-Benz have announced the extension of their power unit contract until the end of 2030. This renewal marks McLaren as the first customer team to commit to Mercedes-AMG's power units under the new regulations set to commence in 2026.

A History of Collaboration and Success

McLaren has been equipped with Mercedes-AMG power units since 2021, resuming a partnership that previously spanned from 1995 to 2014. The 2026 season will represent the 26th year of this storied collaboration, which has been a cornerstone of both brands' long-standing commitment to Formula 1 racing.

Mercedes-Benz has been a pioneer in F1 hybrid technology, achieving the first victory with a hybrid-powered F1 car at the 2009 Hungarian Grand Prix. Since the introduction of the current power unit regulations in 2014, Mercedes-AMG has remained at the forefront of innovation and performance, claiming 114 wins in 203 Grands Prix, including two victories for customer teams.

Looking Towards a New Era

The partnership renewal comes as Formula 1 prepares for a major shift in technical regulations in 2026. The new power units will be a 50/50 split between combustion engines and electric energy, with a maximum system power of over 1,000 horsepower. These units will use 100% sustainable fuel and a single 350 kW electric motor, which is nearly three times more powerful than the current MGU-K.

Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains in Brixworth, UK, is leading the development of these new units. As a major R&D facility for Mercedes-Benz AG, it focuses on high-performance electric powertrains and has produced all Mercedes-AMG F1 powertrains.

McLaren's Commitment to Excellence

McLaren Racing CEO, Zak Brown, expressed enthusiasm for the continued partnership, highlighting the successes achieved with Mercedes-Benz power units, including the 2021 Italian Grand Prix victory and consistent podium finishes in recent seasons.

Andrea Stella, Team Principal of the McLaren F1 Team, emphasized the importance of stability and trust in the relationship, looking forward to continued progress and striving for the top positions in F1.

A Sustainable Future

Both McLaren Racing and Mercedes-Benz are committed to sustainability in motorsport. McLaren Racing, founded in 1963 by Bruce McLaren, has a rich history in racing and is actively competing in multiple series, including Formula 1, INDYCAR, Formula E, and Extreme E, while championing sustainability and diversity in motorsport.

Quite sensible , if Merc crack the engine Great , if Audi do , wait till they've perfected it and then jump ship, I suspect the deal was made financially attractive to Mcl , because it keeps Brixworth boys and girls busy esp if others jump to Audi in 26/27, and a benchmark for the works team
