Feb.5 - Mercedes is still refusing to comment on raging speculation about Lewis Hamilton's 2021 seat.

It is now being rumoured that the seven time world champion may be on the cusp of agreeing a one-year contract with the same EUR 40 million salary, with permission to add two more personal sponsors to his helmet and overalls.

Ralf Schumacher on Thursday called the apparent unseemly financial dispute amid the covid crisis "embarrassing".

"Given his humanitarian streak, Hamilton has to understand that you cannot demand 100 percent in these times. Maybe he should give himself a kick now," he said.

F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali hinted that the situation is a little worrying for the sport he now leads.

"I really hope that we can have this announcement soon because what he's going to fight for this year is something that from a sporting perspective is incredible," said the Italian.

"So the only thing I can say is that I really hope that personally if they are still talking, it's great, I just remind them that the first race will be at the end of March."

Domenicali played down the impression that the contract dispute is about money alone.

"I think they are talking about a lot of stuff," he said. "I'm sure Lewis wants to understand a lot of points also on his own future. I don't think it is only a point related to his salary."

Mercedes is refusing to comment.

"We will speak up when we have something to say," a spokesman is quoted by the German broadcaster RTL. "As has been the case during the entire process, we will not comment on rumours and speculation."

This is the start of the pushback in all sports led by Mercedes. not submitting to the demands of individuals as spectacular as they seemingly may be. Sport cannot afford them anymore without physical support and these supporters once in awe are now rethinking are they really worth it

It is now widely circulated that Mercedes has agreed to the so-called Verstappen clause that would allow Lewis to control his internal competition.

Now, would that not be something?

Lewis, who rightfully calls for fairness and inclusion in his support of social issues would not hesitate to contractually control his own competition and keep it down? Mercedes would conspire to fix the outcome of races?

I thought that in sports everyone was expected and allowed to give it his/her best shot. How would you respond if the second best player of some soccer team was contracted now to outperform the top one?

It could not be right that Lewis be allowed to block the advancement of any other driver. This is the man who, as a gifted driver, got all the breaks that could be expected even if he likes to float otherwise. Remember what the man said, you’ve got to pay your dues if you want to sing the blues and it don’t come easy!

To me a Verstappen type clause would just be a form of cheating and would cheapen the sport. So, Lewis, so, Mercedes, don’t hide from the paying fans that support F1. Clear this up now!

Where I come from two wrongs don’t make a right.

This is not about the ten year feud between Prost and Senna during which each one won the championship in their turn.

You can’t clear this up, only Lewis and Mercedes can.
