Jan.19 - Toto Wolff insists Lewis Hamilton is still capable of winning an eighth Formula 1 title.

"Clearly yes, and I emphasise that strongly," said the Mercedes boss, following recent reports and opinions questioning the ability of the now 39-year-old to return to top winning form.

"There is a reason why Lewis has broken all records and won seven world championships - because his skill is on a higher level. If we give him a good car that he can trust, he can get back in front of everyone," Wolff added.

In a recent interview, however, Hamilton had admitted that he sometimes doubts his abilities.

"All the extraordinary people I met in my life are like that," Wolff told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

His comments come amid Mercedes' announcement of a new long-term contract for returning technical director James Allison, with Wolff describing him as "the most impressive technical leader in our sport".

Allison's task is to end Mercedes' recent losing streak and overtake Red Bull.

"Catching up isn't quite as nice as winning," Allison is quoted as saying by Auto Motor und Sport, "but it's inevitable in sport. You have to stand up when you haven't done your job well enough.

"Red Bull was in no man's land for years," he added. "They can now be even more happy about their success. We want to go there again."

However, Allison admits that beating Red Bull as soon as 2024 may be difficult, agreeing with Hamilton that it will be like climbing Mount Everest.

"It is the most difficult task imaginable," he said, "but it is possible."

He said early simulator tests of the new car show that "the rear is more stable" and "the road holding is more balanced".

"Last year we analysed our weaknesses, hypothesised the reasons for them and are now curious to see whether our actions confirm the diagnosis and hypotheses."

Hamilton drives much like the late great Jim Clark, if he’s given a competitive car this coming season I believe he’ll win his 8th championship, in my opinion he already won an 8th championship !

Clearly, you know very little about Jim Clark!
Clark not only won in many types of open wheeelers, he won in touring cars and also won the Indianapolis 500! Clark also won in cars that were uncompetitive ~ Hamilton only manages to win if his car is super competitive.
Hamilton fades into insignificance when compared to Jim Clark! Do some research before you make foolish remarks!

In my opinion he has only 6 WDC's.
Massa should be the winner of 2008 WDC.
Still focusing on that last race of 2021. What about all the points Max lost through the season from Mercedes drivers. That last race was karma to Wolff and Hamilton for the way they celebrated after Silverstone.
Go Max deserved 3 x WDC.

Best car wins wdc so probably RB unless another team can pull an amazing improvement out of the hat or Masi comes back.
Schumi? To fond of cheating and Max, put under pressure also to fond of cheating. Makes for good entertainment though which is all most people want.

you get 4 out of 10 just for being awake , but cheating? I think you'll find Hannah's the one who lied and cheated and had to apologize to the Fia, his team, the media for doing so. short memories some people, good evening.

So when Tonto says: "Clearly yes, and I emphasise that strongly,..." is a very poor communications strategy.

In reality he's striving to get over his misgivings about The Dame's REAL prospects. She's on the down-side of her career at this point - and there's nothing wrong with that. In fact it is inevitable.

To suggest otherwise is delusional. Mind you, Tonto's painted himself into the corner with Dame Lucille, so I suppose he's putting on a brave face.

Hamilton lied but not to his team whose team manager Dave Ryan instructed him to cheat and was fired. Hamilton apologised and was disqualified from the race. As you say short memories Stroppy.
