Mexican Grand Prix Questions
Can Rosberg take any momentum into next season?
With the championship done and dusted, Nico Rosberg can approach the final three races with a sense of release. The German has been weighed down by the brilliance of Lewis Hamilton, and cracks have appeared over the course of the campaign.
However, with only second place to play for, Rosberg can relax. He is the form driver in qualifying, and looked impressive in free practice yesterday.
If Rosberg is going to have any chance of fighting for the title next year, then he needs to start build his momentum now. A brand new track is a good place to start.
In effect, 2016 starts right here.
Big teams starting to circle around Verstappen
It is inevitable now that Max Verstappen’s time at Toro Rosso is very limited. The Dutchman has shone so much this year that there will be a clamour for his signature very soon.
Red Bull are in pole position, but with their future currently uncertain, Ferrari and Mercedes will be looking on with interest. Kimi Raikkonen’s days in Italy are numbered with 2016 likely to be his last year, while Rosberg needs to prove a point at Mercedes.
Verstappen, and Toro Rosso, seem to love the rain and Mexico is expected to bring some. With F1 starting to wind down for the winter, a little flutter on a Verstappen podium wouldn’t be so outrageous.
Can Mexico live up the hype?
Unlike many new venues in recent years, there is a genuine sense of excitement as well as intrigue as Mexico returns to the grid.
The Hispanic country last hosted a race in 1992 and boasts one of the all-time favourite F1 tracks. It also has a fanatical support, unlike Korea, China and Bahrain.
The track has been altered since Nigel Mansell won the last race there, with the world famous Peraltada corner no longer in existence.
Track organisers decided to replace it with a new stadium section due to safety reasons, and it will be interesting to note if any if the old character and charm is lost.
Mexico should be a breath of fresh air for F1 and with rain on the horizon, it could produce a classic.
Will Perez continue his fine form?
Despite Hamilton fresh off the back of winning the championship, and stars such as Sebastian Vettel, Fernando Alonso and Raikkonen in town, there will only one star attraction this weekend.
Home driver Sergio Pérez is in the best form of his career, and with Aston Martin due to take over Force India and bring significant investment, the future is bright.
Perez is dominating Nico Hulkenberg and is expected that to continue in front of a partisan crowd. Anything less will be considered a great disappointment.
But that in itself shows how far Perez has come this season. A bigger drive team could come calling soon.
