Newey: Catching Mercedes will be hard
Red Bull designer Adrian Newey has said that it will be “very difficult” for engine manufacturers to catch Mercedes in 2015.
Mercedes dominated in 2014, the first season of the new rules, and restrictions on engine development means it is highly likely that they will be the class of the field once more.
Newey, who is stepping back from his role with the former champions this year, says that Ferrari, Renault and newcomers Honda will find it hard to get on Mercedes level, who boast the strongest engine.
He told Sky Sports News: “Can Renault and Ferrari get to Mercedes level? It’s going to be a very difficult challenge- and of course we don’t know where Honda are going to come in.
“Clearly last year was engine-dominated and we saw that with Williams springing forward. Obviously Williams did a very good job but I think what really made the difference for them was the engine.”
Newey was credited with being the brains behind the Red Bull era which brought four successive championships for both the team, and driver Sebastian Vettel. That era is now at an end, with Vettel moving to Ferrari for this season.
Newey said: “He wants to stretch his wings and discover other things. It’s a natural curiosity in life to find out how you can perform in different environments.
"I can understand why he has moved. He’s a very bright guy and unfortunately I am sure he will bring things to Ferrari that we rather he didn’t, but we understand.”
Vettel will partner Kimi Raikkonen at Ferrari.
