The Nurburgring has, as expected, confirmed that it will not host the German Grand Prix this season, which effectively scraps it from the 2015 calendar.

The venue, which is due to rotate hosting duties with Hockenheim every year, has suffered from financial issues in the past few years and can’t afford to stage the race.

Hockenheim, which is also struggling financially, was asked to step in but they confirmed they wouldn’t do so last week.

A spokesman told reporters: “Due to time constraints, organisational and economic reasons, it makes no sense at this stage to stage the race."

"Because so far no agreement could be reached, we have now closed the window. We regret that very much."

This year will be just the third season in F1 history that the German Grand Prix won’t be staged.

Hockenheim confirmed that it intends to fulfil its duties in 2016, and will host the race.
