Lewis Hamilton is open to the idea of a third car in F1 teams, as it may provide an opportunity for young drivers to race at the highest level.

The idea of thee car teams is under serious review after both Marussia and Caterham entered administration last week, and the future of Sauber remains far from certain.

It has been a hot topic this week with some drivers in favour of the decision, and some driver firmly against.

Hamilton sees the positives if the system is used in the right way, he told reporters: “I think we would have to expand the team and make sure the efforts aren’t diluted”.

“But if it is a position for a younger driver it could be quite good, especially bringing them on and giving them the best experience and putting them alongside top drivers that have the experience, they might come along much more than they have in the past.”

However, Hamilton’s former McLaren team-mate, and fellow Brit, Jenson Button is stubbornly against the idea, even though it may save his F1 career.

Button isn’t expected to be a part of McLaren’s plans for next year with fresh reports linking Fernando Alonso and Kevin Magnussen to the team for next year.

However, Button said: “If you have a team like this year (Mercedes) that have been a step ahead they lock out the podium in the top three places. So personally, I feel it’s a shame if it goes in that direction.”

“I don’t like the idea of three cars in a team. Two cars is the way it has always been and it is the way it works in Formula 1.”

It is believed that many of the team feel that a third car would be tough to run.
