Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo has admitted that his team have a long way to go before they can compete for race wins this season.
The former champions have had a poor season so far due to their Renault engine, but the Australian racer hopes to claim a top five finish in Spain this weekend.
He told Sky Sports News: “We’re not on the pace of the Mercedes and Ferrari. They’re our target for now; even Williams have been a bit quicker so far, so we need to crack into the top five, for sure, and once we’re there look towards the top three and obviously get back on the podium.
“We’ll have some aerodynamic updates in Barcelona and we’re hoping for a bit more from the engine as well, a bit more power. I think these are the small steps which are going to keep getting us closer and closer.”
Ricciardo is taking inspiration from Ferrari, who made a giant leap over the winter to become the second fastest team and genuine title contenders.
Improving reliability has to be their first concern, before pace can be added.
