Nico Rosberg got his weekend off to a positive start as he finished Friday's second practice on top of the timesheets.

The German beat his world champion team-mate, Lewis Hamilton, by just 0.1s while Ferrari finished a distant third and fourth.

Although the Italian team matched the pace of Mercedes on longer runs, it is thought that the Constructors Champions put more fuel in their car for much of the session.

Hamilton’s qualifying hopes could be dented as he is under investigation for failing to leave the pit lane correctly after a brief red flag period, caused by an incident between Sebastian Vettel and Sergio Pérez.

The pair collided at the first corner at low speed, but enough damage was done to cause bodywork to fly.

Kimi Raikkonen, who came third in the session, and beat Vettel in both FP1 and FP2, is also under investigation.

Elsewhere, Valtteri Bottas finished fifth fastest ahead of Daniel Ricciardo’s Red Bull, while Pastor Maldonado came seventh for Lotus.

McLaren’s Jenson Button stopped out on track for the second session in a row with engine problems, while Fernando Alonso finished 12th.
