Lewis Hamilton believes he has finally found a chink in Nico Rosberg’s armour after the Italian Grand Prix. While leading, the German caved in under pressure from Hamilton and ran wide at the simple first chicane gifting the Brit his sixth win of the season.
Despite Rosberg maintaining his championship lead, which currently stands at 22 point, Hamilton will feel the momentum has shifted in his favour.
Rosberg and Hamilton haven’t come together on track as often as expected, following multiple reliability problems for both drivers. But Hamilton seems to have the edge when they scrap, and his bullying tactics are working.
Hamilton said: “I knew that was the best time to put pressure on him. I did it a couple of races ago and he doesn’t seem to like it so I’ll try it a bit more”.
Rosberg will be keen to find a solution to his problems quickly, with just six races to go this season. Since all the controversy that has followed in the wake of the Belgium Grand Prix a couple of weeks ago, Rosberg looks a different character. He looks less assured of himself and he can’t let that go on if he is to win the championship.
Hamilton meanwhile, is relaxed ahead of the run-in: “We’ve a long way to go, but one step at a time. The support I’ve had from the fans and family has been incredible. I’m going to take that energy and try and move forwards. I’m still looking for that weekend where you don’t have any problems”.
A downbeat Rosberg said he was disappointed with the result: “It’s a terrible feeling to lose the lead like that but in the end Lewis was really quick in the whole race. He came like a rocket and I had to push and I made the mistake. He drove really well and deserved it”.
