Nico Rosberg's dominance at Hockenheim this weekend continued this morning as he topped the third practice session ahead of this afternoon's qualifying session.

The Mercedes driver finished less than a tenth ahead of Lewis Hamilton, who was a distant second in both sessions yesterday.

The German, in his home grand prix, is bidding to regain his championship lead after Hamilton surged past with victory in Hungary last weekend.

The pole fight later today is expected to be solely between Hamilton and Rosberg, although Daniel Ricciardo's Red Bull and Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen were within two tenths of Rosberg.

There could be bad news for Mercedes though, with Hamilton summoned to the stewards regarding an unsafe release from the pits.

If he does get a reprimand, as Daniil Kvyat did last year, then he is likely to get a 10-place grid penalty.

The session gets underway at 2pm local time.
