Nico Rosberg’s luck continued in qualifying for the Russian Grand Prix as he took pole after team-mate Lewis Hamilton suffered reliability woe again.

Hamilton may start at the back of the grid after another power unit problem, identical to the issue which stopped him in China, allowing Rosberg to easily secure pole.

The German is now a massive favourite to extend his 36-point championship lead, while Hamilton will do well to get a podium.

Sebastian Vettel qualified second for Ferrari, although he will drop to seventh after an engine change.

That promotes Valtteri Bottas to the front row, while Kimi Raikkonen starts third ahead of Bottas’ team-mate Felipe Massa.

Daniel Ricciardo out-qualified home-boy Daniil Kvyat, although Sergio Pérez squeezed in between them.

Hamilton is provisionally down to start 10th, although if his engine changes he will move back to last, promoting Jenson Button to 11th.

The McLaren driver failed to reach Q3, along with Fernando Alonso and Haas F1 pair Romain Grosjean and Esteban Gutierrez.
