Race legend Sir Stirling Moss passed away yesterday. He had been ill since 2016 and had serious chest infection. He was 90 years old. His wife told the press: “It was one lap too many, He just closed his eyes.”
The Englishman drove 66 Formula 1 Grand Prix between 1951 and 1961 and won sixteen races during that career. He was the driver who had the most race victories without a championship title..He came second four times and third three times in the World Cup final score.
Moss excelled not only in Formula 1 He was an all-rounder and booked in a total of no less than 212 wins different disciplines. After a heavy crash at Spa-Francorchamps circuit that almost took his life in 1962, Moss was forced to say goodbye of top-level racing. He was more than a month in a coma and was paralyzed for over a half year, but did recover from that.
In 1955 he was signed by Mercedes Benz to race in F1 alongside the great Juan Manuel Fangio, who beat him to the title. However that year he also delivered one of the most exceptional drives of his generation during the Mille Miglia, a punishing road race in Italy. Driving a Mercedes-Benz 300SLR he set a new record and beat Fangio by 32 minutes.
Six-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton, built a close friendship at the start of his career with Moss and was among many current and former drivers to pay tribute to the man. Hamilton said “Today we say goodbye to Sir Stirling Moss, the racing legend,” Hamilton tweeted. “I certainly will miss our conversations. I am truly grateful to have had these special moments with him. Sending my prayers and thoughts to his family. May he rest in peace.”
