Williams performance chief Rob Smedley has poured cold water on suggestions that they could tussle with Ferrari at this weekend’s Austrian Grand Prix.

The British team have been firmly stuck behind Mercedes and Ferrari so far this season, but had hoped to catch the Italian team in Austria thanks to a significant upgrade.

Smedley told reporters: "We have a healthy upgrade coming in Austria, but then we've had healthy upgrades at quite a few of the races this year.

"We just keep chipping away at it. I don't think we are in the position where we need to talk up what we are going to deliver too much.

"What we do on the track and what we do on a Sunday afternoon should do that talking for us. What is good is that we are getting upgrades all the time and we are moving closer to the front.

"Equally as important is that we are moving further away from the people behind us."
