Adrian Sutil has admitted he was surprised to see financially challenged teams Marussia and Caterham competing for so long.

The two minnows have both entered administration in the past week. And Sutil’s Sauber team are also vulnerable, with many expecting them to be the next to go.

The experienced German says it is a shame that neither team are racing in Austin this weekend, leaving just 18 cars on the grid, but reveals everyone knew it was inevitable.

He told reporters: “It’s not nice to see two teams missing here, but it was obvious it was going to happen sooner or later.”

“Last year or this year so many teams had financial problems that I was surprised how long they actually survived and how they go on the whole time.”

The sport has come in for heavy criticism for allowing teams to struggle so much. The FIA’s idea of a budget cap collapsed, leaving the richer teams with a massive advantage.

Sutil believes something will change to prevent this happening again: “This is how it is and for sure this is a reaction maybe followed by a few changes to get the teams back into Formula 1. Only 18 cars running this weekend is not enough.”

“If you don’t make a change, if you always try to just survive, you will never make a change. But this is a clear point there’s something wrong. The question is what is wrong?

Sutil and Sauber have failed to score a point this season and sit behind Marussia in the constructors standings.
