Feb.19 - Formula 1 drivers should not make "millions", according to AlphaTauri boss Franz Tost.

Last year, the sport's top earner Lewis Hamilton infamously declared "Who is Franz Tost?" when the Austrian publicly backed moves to install a driver salary cap.

"It was a legitimate question," Tost says now when asked about the incident and Hamilton's retort. "We have nothing to do with each other.

"I can laugh about it, it was a funny episode - no more and no less," he told the German broadcaster n-tv.

Tost says he is still highly supportive of the salary cap idea.

"We have cost limits for the cars, for the teams, for the engines - why is there an infinite amount of money available for the drivers?" he wondered.

"The drivers should get something, quite logically. But there should never be a discussion that goes into the millions.

"Otherwise I would tell them they can choose - either we put the money into the car so that it is competitive, or you drivers take it and drive around.

"If someone is a real racing driver, he wants the money in the car," Tost added.

Tost is also hoping Hamilton is beaten to the 2021 world championship.

"I hope Max Verstappen will win it," he admitted. "It is important that there is a fight in the leading group. The worst thing of all is that Mercedes continues to dominate."

Franz is not fair to de drivers and seemed to forget that they making money for their marketing value and not for their drivingwork or time. Every topsporter in Golf,Tennis,Soccer, Basketball, Football and also ofcourse F1 earn money for their name, publicity and marketing value so Franz stop talking like this YOU KNOW BETTER !

So many little cry babies on here constantly triggered by the mere mention of Hamilton. If the car is so good then why isn’t Bottas world champion why didn’t Nico Rosberg win more world championships. Using your logic then we can comfortably agree that Schumacher also was a crap driver but was lucky to have a good car. Your motorsport knowledge is very weak I’m guessing you’ve never been behind the wheel of a race car.

I wonder if this ass would have the same view if he could achieve 7 world titles. I wonder if it was Schumacher, Vettel, Alonso or Verstappen earning this sum if he would still complain.
It's called "know your worth" and negotiate accordingly. Most people, likely including this ass, couldn't muster the discipline, sacrifice, work ethic and training regimen simultaneously required at a high level to do what he does. It's his consistency that's most difficult to achieve and what really sets him apart,, not sporadic bouts of talent like Max. Lewis's natural talent accounts for a small fraction! He justly earned every penny.
So to all who says he's overpaid, I say keep bitching. Cas that's all you can do.

@Shroppyfly: Did you notice the part where I said "negotiate accordingly"? Key word being negotiate. You drive a hard bargain then negotiate your minimum. Covid economic rationale is a valid point from Merc. This is Chess son; a game of strategy. You play the long game strategically and take a small loss if deemed necessary based on the current circumstance and go in for the kill when the time is right. He'll be in a stronger position when this pandemic wanes in 2022. There are other valid teams you know? Backroom negotiations ongoing? Think he got this far without taking calculated risks? Well if you think he's the bitch for taking the cut, bless your heart son!

hell thats boring..., uk feeling on this........... 2021 his last year merc will have used covid and economy to push his pay down , , remember toto early on saying oh itll be easy , his contract , mmm worlds changed unfortrunately for lh , if what you say is correct why did his contract take so long........... it wasnt negotiation , it was merc playing hard ball , lh knows his days were numbered once gr had his go in the merc, and finally other teams ? why would ferrari take on another world champion , they tried that with vettel and alonso , , plus hed not consider any other team, so , from a Brits point of view, its his last hurrah, then fade away, i dont need blessing, or being called a son thank you very much

Franz, Share the wealth, Drivers like Hamilton risk their lives racing, they deserve to have a place at the table. We haven't even mentioned Racers like Max, they deserve even more.
