Jean-Eric Vergne believes “it could be possible” that he stays with Toro Rosso next season.

The Frenchman was initially told he will be replaced by 17-year-old Dutchman Max Verstappen, who was scheduled to race alongside Vergne’s current team-mate, Daniil Kvyat.

However, Kvyat has now been promoted to Red Bull to replace the Ferrari-bound Sebastian Vettel, leaving a seat free at Toro Rosso.

An upbeat Vergne told Sky Sports: “I think there is good potential”, when asked about his F1 future.

“I have a really good relationship with the team and I have shown recently that even with difficult circumstances for myself I have always been able to perform well."

"Unfortunately this season I have had a lot of DNFs and technical issues which meant I couldn’t show my potential.”

“Hopefully getting one more year I can show my potential- the car will be better, the engine will be better and more reliable and therefore it could be a great thing for me.”

Vergne sits 13th in the championship table, with 21 points
