Jean-Eric Vergne has confirmed he is leaving Toro Rosso at the end of this year.

It was initially announced that Vergne would leave Red Bull’s junior team in August, with teenager Max Verstappen signed as his replacement.

But with Sebastian Vettel leaving Red Bull, Vergne’s current team-mate, Danil Kvyat, was promoted to race for Red Bull which has left a seat free alongside Verstappen.

Many thought Vergne would be re-signed but he has today said on Twitter his Toro Rosso career is over.

He said: “Despite a good season and 22 pts, I’ll not drive anymore for Toro Rosso in 2015. Thanks for those years. Let’s go for another big challenge.”

Youngster Carlos Sainz is widely expected to become Verstappen’s team-mate in what will again be a rookie pairing for the team.
