Verstappen Sets the Pace as F1 2024 Pre-Season Testing Commences in Bahrain
Feb.21 - In a sun-drenched Bahrain International Circuit, the 2024 Formula 1 pre-season testing got off to a flying start, with Max Verstappen, the reigning world champion, dominating the headlines by topping the timing sheets on the opening morning. The Dutchman's relentless pursuit of perfection saw him better his previous year's time significantly, laying down a marker with a blistering 1m 31.344s. His performance not only showcased Red Bull's continued dominance but also hinted at a potential speed escalation in this year's championship contenders.
Lando Norris and Carlos Sainz followed closely, igniting the paddock with speculation and excitement about what's to come. Norris, driving for McLaren, showcased his skill and the team's offseason improvements by slotting into second place, just ahead of Sainz, who demonstrated Ferrari's potential despite the team grappling with setup and balance throughout the day.
Williams, however, faced a challenging start to their campaign. Both Alex Albon and Logan Sargeant encountered reliability issues, limiting their track time and leaving the team in a race against time to rectify these setbacks before the season opener. Team Principal James Vowles remained optimistic, emphasizing the importance of identifying and solving these problems in testing rather than during a race weekend.
As the sun set over Bahrain, the floodlights took over, illuminating the track and the teams' continued efforts to tweak and improve their machines. Red Bull's innovative approach to their car's design, particularly the sidepod configurations, was a topic of much discussion and analysis among the paddock insiders. Their bold adjustments seem to be paying dividends, with Verstappen comfortably ahead of the pack.
Mercedes, Ferrari, and McLaren emerged from the day's running with reasons to be cheerful, their cars showing promise in the early stages of testing. However, the true performance landscape of the 2024 grid will only become clearer as testing progresses and teams begin to push the limits of their new cars.
Elsewhere, Daniel Ricciardo's return to the track was met with a positive outlook, as the Australian and his team embark on a new era with fresh leadership and ambitions. Ricciardo's fourth-place in the day's timings suggests a competitive streak that could see them mix it up with the midfield battle.
Williams' struggles were compounded by a driveshaft issue for Sargeant and a fuel pump problem for Albon, underscoring the importance of reliability in the unforgiving world of Formula 1. As the team works tirelessly to overcome these hurdles, the clock is ticking down to the season's opening race, leaving little room for error.
The day concluded with teams and drivers reflecting on their achievements and areas for improvement. With the season's first race just around the corner, the pressure is mounting to fine-tune the cars to perfection. As Verstappen and Red Bull end the day on top, the question on everyone's lips is whether anyone can challenge their supremacy in 2024, or if the Dutchman is on a clear path to his fourth consecutive world title.
As testing continues, eyes will be firmly fixed on Bahrain, where the seeds of success and failure for the upcoming Formula 1 season are being sown.
Max Verstappen's sector times were:
- Sector 1: 29.066 sec.
- Sector 2: 39.284 sec
- Sector 3: 22.993 sec

déjà vu all over again
People shouldn't make definitive conclusions based on a single day's running.
Sure! Being faster than the lap record is quite normal during the first day of testing...hahaha
Lapping faster than an official lap record from the mid-2000s has zero relevance, lol.
How about after 2 days running , ill edit this post again tomorrow to 3 lol
It's all over Jere. I'm looking forward to 2025
Not at this point because no team ever shows their true performance in testing, so once again, only the first qualifying session will reveal the competitive order.
Soon all the propaganda, sandbagging and bulls hit will give way to reality and the grid will tell the tale of which team is really dominant. Oohhhh ....... Red Bull is so far ahead ~ what a surprise!
MB and Ferrari closing the gap is pure propaganda. Probably, McLaren will end up with the role of bridesmaid this season!
Still too early to assess. But I do commend all for the depth and thoroughness of these practice days. Lap times, red flag and restart practices and even DRS practice. (Drain Repair System)
