The Brazilian Grand Prix has been held at the Autódromo José Carlos Pace in São Paulo, Brazil each year since 1990. Building of the track was completed in 1940, but the first Brazilian Grand Prix wasn’t held here until 1972.

Between 1972 and 1990, it was only periodically held at this arena, partly because the course has been occasionally deemed too dangerous and/or ill-maintained. Originally the course was named Autódromo de Interlagos, meaning “between lakes”, as it is located between two manmade lakes, Guarapiranga and Billings, which supply the city with water and electricity.

In 1985 the course was renamed Autódromo José Carlos Pace to honor José Carlos Pace who perished in a plane crash in 1977. Pace, a Brazilian Formula One racer, won his only race (of 73) at this course in 1975. The track was built on hilly terrain and drivers move in the non-traditional counter-clockwise direction, making this course notoriously difficult and tiring. The 71-lap race covers nearly 306 km.

CLIMATE OF SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL

São Paulo sits near the Tropic of Capricorn but due to its elevation of 760 meters above sea level, it’s considered to have a temperate climate. Daily average temperatures don’t fluctuate much between the seasons, with the coolest month July seeing an average temperature of 15.8 degrees Celsius and the warmest month February seeing an average temperature of 22.4 degrees Celsius.

Despite a small temperature swing between winter and summer, São Paulo experiences four seasons. Summers are wet with about half the days between December and February seeing rainfall. These three months each average over 200 mm of rain and account for about half of São Paulo’s annual rainfall. Winter is dry with only a dozen days seeing rain on average throughout the season. Winters are mild although frost can be seen occasionally, especially away from the center of the city. November marks the end of spring for São Paulo, with the wet, summer season not too far away.
