F1 is edging closer to installing a new qualifying format for 2019.

Recently, we reported that a 'Q4' segment could be added to the format in a bid to spice up the action, with shorter segment durations meaning drivers have less laps to perfect their time.

Q4 would then end with a ten minute, eight-car battle for pole.

"It's a new idea proposed by formula one as a result of a lot of research and asking the fans," FIA race director Charlie Whiting said.

"It was discussed last week in the Strategy Group. Personally I like the idea but it's not up to me."

I liked the old format where all drivers were on the track for the whole qualifying session. The cream still rose to teh top. Many of the cyurrent drivers would not cope and the cool headed best win over teh spoilt pandered attutudes of many of the current batch. Adding another session is not favoured.

The current system works well so I'd leave well alone and concentrate on other things. Increasing the amount of pit stops from one to two or more preferred by me bringing back refuelling (safely) so that mid range teams can upset the front runners by low fuelling would add a bit of spice.
And one more which is definitely a bit more left field would be to handicap the cars in qualifying according to where the team finished in the previous season so that if Ferrari come second to Mercedes then it receives a handicap of one tenth of a second and so Williams, finishing tenth would get nine tenths a second handicap. Well I did say it was a bit mad!

It’s. it going to improve things at all. Leave it alone. There is too much traffic on Q1 as it is for drivers to have a fair chance to get one decent lap in, how is reducing the Q1 time going to help teams lower down the grid? It’s just going to penialise them further. If you want to improve things make teams have to run all three tyre compounds on race day and let teams carry as much fuel as they like. Nobody wants to see cars crusing around saving fuel and tyres. RACING is call racing for a reason!
