Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has hailed Lewis Hamilton after his remarkable drive saw him salvage a podium despite starting last in the Belgian Grand Prix.

Nico Rosberg won the race convincingly, but Hamilton limited the damage by losing just 10 points to the German in the championship.

Hamilton was largely aided by the poor performance of others, such as Max Verstappen, Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel – who clashed on the first lap.

"I'm so delighted for the team. We've changed a few engines this weekend and Lewis was able to climb back to third with the help of fortune and it's extremely good,” said Wolff.

"I am happy because we lacked pace yesterday. We kept on our path and it paid off. Once we were on the medium tyre we could stay ahead of Ricciardo on the soft.

"With Lewis we were lucky but a great drive as well. Lewis has so many engines he could go well into next year. He had a sensational drive and not lot a lot of points lost and has engines in his pocket."
