May 10 - It will be "a long time" before many of Red Bull's new engine department recruits can start work.

That is the word from Toto Wolff, as Mercedes reels from the loss of at least 15 members of its ultra-successful F1 engine operations at Brixworth.

"Some of them cannot go to the new company, Red Bull Powertrains, before the end of 2023 - so a long time," the Mercedes team boss told Sky Deutschland.

Red Bull's Dr Helmut Marko said earlier in Barcelona that Mercedes will struggle to replace many of the defectors because about 10 of them are "managers".

However, Wolff insists: "The majority were not performance people, they were production people."

And the Mercedes team chief suggested he is also planning to step up the new engine 'battlefield' with Red Bull.

"We knew that Red Bull was taking this seriously, but so do we," said Wolff. "Let's see what we can think of."

It's a cut throat business, so I'm really looking forward to see what RB can come up with. However, in my life I have worked for many many managers, that knew less than I did. Jobs for the boys etc. Good luck RB in thinking you have the cream from the top. However, I think you have the crud from the bottom. :0)

Possibly. Toto and the Doc have opposite stories. Regardless, these guys may be the original Ilmor engine gurus, who know their sh*t...

theyve got to sign up with vw group, run it as a porsche redbull, otherwise the costs will get out of control as Redbulls Engine Supplier... i dont think it will be involved in the cost cap, could be wrong but its i think its a separate entity therefore not subject to the f1 teams cost cap
